Esta imagen sobria del padre del artista fue pintada el año que Maarten dejó su ciudad natal de Haarlem para un viaje prolongado a Italia. La inscripción en holandés en el parapeto habla en la voz del sitter: "Mi hijo me retrató aquí cuando había vivido setenta y cinco años, así que dicen." Una mirada directa confronta al espectador con la presencia de un hombre severo cerca del final de su vida. Varios años después, Jacob murió a la edad de setenta y nueve años, mientras Maarten todavía estaba en el extranjero.
