Hartley pasó un verano productivo en 1916 en compañía de Charles Demuth y Eugene O"Neill en Provincetown, Massachusetts. El complejo Cape Cod fue un lugar favorito para artistas, escritores y actores. Dentro de este pequeño formato, varias casas, veleros y el alto Monumento del Peregrino se comprimen en formas geométricas planas. Los títulos de Hartley de los años 1910, como Movimiento, Sinfonía y Arreglo, como los primeros utilizados por Whistler, sugieren analogías musicales para imágenes visuales.
