Se dice que este manto ha sido hecho por Mary Ann Evans (George Eliot) y sus compañeros de escuela, aunque no está claro cuán vieja era cuando se hizo. Mary. Ann asistió a tres escuelas de internado. Miss Lathom está en Attleborough, Nuneaton de cinco a seis años. Luego se mudó a casa de la Sra. Wallington en Nuneaton y se quedó allí hasta que tenía doce años. El último movimiento fue en 1832 a la escuela de Miss Franklin, Nant Glyn, en Coventry. Mary. Ann se quedó allí hasta que la salud de su madre la llamó de vuelta a casa alrededor de Navidad 1835.
