HIDA Shūzan fue un artista que contribuyó al florecimiento de las artes japonesas en la era moderna. Su ciudad natal de Izura, Prefectura de Ibaraki, se convirtió en un centro líder de la pintura japonesa después de OKAKURA Tenshin visitó Izura a invitación de Hida. Okakura, junto con otros pintores japoneses líderes como YOKOYAMA Taikan, no sólo estableció un lugar de estudio artístico en Izura, sino que también reubicó la división de pintura del Japón Art Institute (Nihon Bijutsuin) a la ciudad. Ver a estos artistas en el trabajo inspiró a Hida en sus propias búsquedas creativas. Sus pinturas, a menudo de paisajes o de escenas históricas, combinan gran detalle con cepillos rigurosos.
