Justo en el reverso del mullón aparece una figura arrodillada, con su mano derecha en el pecho y sosteniendo un cartouche con la mano izquierda donde, según la tradición, estaba escribiendo “arquitecto”. Esta imagen representa al mismo Maestro Mateo, que se coloca mirando el altar alto, ofreciendo su obra a Santiago. Tradicionalmente, la gente fiel golpeó la cabeza de la escultura contra sí misma tres veces para que el Maestro Mateo pudiera transferir algo de su sabiduría a ellos, y por eso se conoce como Santo dos croques.
