Pintado alrededor de 1290, esta encantadora pintura es típica de los paneles de forma sencilla que servían como retablos antes del advenimiento del pólipo gótico multipanel. El artista era un modesto seguidor de Cimabue que, a su manera atractiva, intenta mantener el ritmo con las innovaciones de Duccio y Giotto. El gesto del Niño —"como si quisiera distraer a su madre de su melancolía" (Hans Belting)— ocurre en los ivories góticos franceses y "ha sido transferido de la iconografía del amor a la de los motivos religiosos". Otro erudito señala que la obra del artista —populista en carácter— supone ser interpretada en términos humanos y no puramente artísticos.
