Mather Brown nació en Boston, hijo de un relojero y descendiente de varios famosos divinos de Nueva Inglaterra, incluyendo Cotton Mather y Aumentar Mather. Después de trabajar como retratista itinerante en Nueva Inglaterra, Brown fue a Londres en 1780 para estudiar con Benjamin West. Se convirtió en un retrato de moda en varias ciudades ingleses provinciales. La joven elegantemente vestida mira desde su música en el piano, que lleva la etiqueta 1797 de la firma de Londres de Kirkman.
