Barend Cornelis Koekkoek y Wijnandus Johannes Josephus Nuyen combinaron el paisaje romántico con un renacimiento del estilo holandés del siglo XVII, en particular la dramática pintura de humor de Jacob van Ruisdael y Allaert van Everdingen. Cuando tenía veinte años, Nuyen viajó a Francia. Allí conoció a artistas que pintaban de la manera romántica, con fuertes contrastes de luz y sombra, colores intensos y un sentido del drama. Nuyen se sintió fascinado con este estilo de pintura y pronto surgió como el principal artista romántico de Holanda. Esta pintura es un buen ejemplo de su obra, con un castillo arruinado, un árbol muerto soplado por el viento, nubes atravesando el cielo, y sombras oscureciendo el paisaje. El trabajo de Nuyen fue innovador y exuberante por los estándares holandeses.
