La pintura representa un té de estilo inglés en el Salón Four-Mirror del Palacio del Templo en París en 1766. Los salones, lugares de conversaciones en sofisticados círculos sociales en París y las provincias, desempeñaron un papel importante en la vida cultural del siglo XVIII. Compromisos artísticos, problemas de decoración y esfuerzos literarios todos se convirtieron en temas en los salones. Es interesante notar que el término que diseña reuniones sociales también se aplicó al modo dominante de la exposición artística, las famosas Salones de la pintura.
