En 1890, Maxime Maufra dejó una carrera en negocios para pintar bajo la guía de los artistas paisajistas de Nantes Leroux y Leduc. En el mismo año, mientras viajaba con su amigo Dezaunay (1854-1938), conoció a Gauguin en Pont-Aven. En 1892 se hospedó en Montmartre no muy lejos del estudio de Eugene Delatre (1864-1938), quien lo presentó al grabado. Basado en un dibujo de Maufra realizado en 1892, esta impresión representa la costa rocosa de Porgastel en Le Pouldu siendo golpeado por un mar tormentoso, con una onda particularmente grande que se acerca desde la izquierda.
