En 1842, la industria fotográfica llegó al Perú. fotógrafos franceses y de otras nacionalidades llegaron al territorio peruano e implementaron estudios fotográficos que grabaron los tiempos. La venta de fotografías se convirtió en parte de un circuito comercial centrado en las élites, pero con el avance y la reducción de las tecnologías reproductivas, apareció un mercado más dinámico: el de la venta de las tarjetas de visita. Asimismo, la prensa y los medios editoriales ilustraron sus textos utilizando fotografías, transformando las imágenes en grabados, inicialmente a través del uso del corte de madera para lograr su impresión.
