Para la biografía de Jacob Cats ver la entrada en el retrato 1634 de Van Mierevelt de Jacob Cats (SK-A-258). La única diferencia sustancial entre el retrato actual y aquel, que también le muestra la fuerza de busto y en perfil perdido contra fondo oscuro, es su ropa. El collar redondo y tabbaard usado por Cats en el retrato de 1634 son visibles en la pintura actual como pentimento. Parece, entonces, que Van Mierevelt actualizó una réplica del retrato de Cats que tenía en stock.
