Después de asistir a Fudosha, Tsunetomo se graduó de la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Tokio. Comenzó la revista Hosun junto con Hakutei Ishii y otros. En 1914, fue a Europa y simpatizó con el estilo de C_zanne. Regresó al Japón el año siguiente. En 1922, participó en la fundación de Shunyokai. Aunque comenzó como artista de yoga, después de regresar de Europa, retrató la naturaleza en los distritos Musashino y lagos en pinceladas poéticas de tinta y lavado y fue alabado como “el poeta de las llanuras. ”
