El gallo, representante del jefe patriarcal de la familia —por el ideal confuciano— era un tema popular en la pintura china y japonesa de la era premoderna. Aquí, los pájaros están siluetados en blanco negativo contra un fondo de lavado de tinta gris. Junto con Itō Jakuchū (1716–1800) y Soga Shōhaku (1730–1781), Rosetsu fue conocido como uno de los “Tres Eccentrics” (san kijin) de Kioto del siglo XVIII. Estudió con Maruyama Ōkyo (1733-1795), fundador de la escuela Maruyama de Kyoto.
