La característica calidad decorativa de la pintura de Chikutō es ampliamente evidente aquí en el arreglo rítmico de los garzas, enmarcado audazmente por su perca nevada. Los marcados contrastes blanco y negro y los patrones repetitivos de lavados horizontales que definen las formas blancas de las aves y ramas contribuyen aún más a un efecto de elegancia gráfica. Chikutō, hijo de un médico en Nagoya, se trasladó en 1815 a Kyoto, donde se unió al círculo del artista nanga Rai Sanyō (1780-1832).
