Durante los años 1880 la salud de Nicholas Chevalier comenzó a declinar y la gota severa en su mano derecha interrumpió su capacidad de pintar durante largos períodos. In an attempt to relieve his condition Chevalier and his wife spent winters on the island of Madeira in Portugal, where his final watercolours were made. Este acuarela fue exhibida en la Real Academia en 1895, poco antes de que Chevalier se viera obligado a renunciar a la pintura en conjunto, pasando su jubilación en historias y poesías de Londres y dirigiendo una orquesta amateur.
