Los tonos rojos brillantes unifican esta pintura, uniendo el traje de la sirvienta, las manzanas que se meten, y la alfombra turca sobre la mesa. Pintado unos años después de que Maes dejara el estudio de Rembrandt, esta imagen revela la deuda del artista con su maestro en sus suaves contornos y efectos de luz. Los pintores anteriores habían hecho de las sirenas el tema de las escenas cómicas o sexualmente sugestivas. Con esta representación sensible y ennoblecedora, Maes hizo una innovación importante.
