Nicholaos Tzafouris fue uno de los numerosos pintores de iconos que trabajaban en la ciudad de Candia (ahora Iraklion) en Creta en el momento en que Creta estaba bajo el control de Venecia. La combinación de elementos bizantinos y latinos vistos en muchos iconos de Cretan fue bien recibida localmente y en Italia. La inscripción griega en este icono describe un tipo de icono bizantino en el que los soldados arrastran a Cristo a Gólgota. La imagen aquí, sin embargo, es occidental en tipo, mostrando a Cristo llevando la cruz a Gólgota. El soldado antes de Cristo lleva armadura italiana contemporánea, y aquellos detrás de él llevan armadura bizantina o cretana.
