En vísperas de la elección del arzobispo de Myra en Lycia (Asia Menor) en el siglo IV dC, se reveló a uno de los obispos que un joven llamado Nicolás había sido elegido divinamente. Cuando San Nicolás se presentó en la catedral al día siguiente fue elegido e inmediatamente instalado como arzobispo. La historia se cuenta en The Golden Legend. Veronese muestra el momento del reconocimiento de Nicolás – o posterior consagración – con un ángel arriba trayendo la robada, crozier y mitre de su obispo. El santo obedece humildemente. Esta obra fue pintada para el altar de San Nicolás en S. Benedetto Po, cerca de Mantua, donde probablemente fue instalada en 1562.
