Sólo se conocen dos esculturas de mármol de Gauguin, este jefe de retrato de su esposa danesa Mette y uno de su hijo, Emile, tallado en el mismo año. En ese momento la familia Gauguin vivía en un apartamento en la Rue des Fourneaux, en París, que pertenecía a un escultor llamado Bouillot. Considerando la inexperiencia de Gauguin como escultor en mármol, y el naturalismo altamente logrado de esta obra, parece probable que Bouillot ayudó a Gauguin en la talla, pero hasta qué punto no se conoce.
