Aunque se publicó en el siglo XVII, la novela de Cervantes Don Quijote era todavía muy popular durante el tiempo que Gustave Dore fue elegido para ilustrar el libro en los años 1860. Su representación del Quijote farcical y el corto y pauncado Sancho Panza se hicieron tan famosos que influenciaron a generaciones enteras de lectores. Las imágenes que creó representando Quijote, Panza y los otros personajes a través de sus episodios se hicieron tan populares que se convirtieron en el estándar para la forma en que la gente veía los personajes en el libro. Otras publicaciones cinematográficas, así como la imagen pública, se basaron en la representación de Dore de la apariencia física de Quijote.
