Aunque creó muchas obras serias para poemas épicos de grandes autores, Dore también ilustraba muchos cuentos de hadas, incluyendo Little Red Riding Hood y Cendrillon, o Cenicienta. La historia de Cenicienta fue tanto una influencia cultural en el siglo XIX como hoy, ya que es una historia de circunstancias injustas y la capacidad humana de esperar que la magia pueda ayudarnos a superar esas circunstancias. Fue en el siglo XIX que el Hermano Grimm escribió la versión de la historia que era ampliamente popular en ese momento. Su gran compilación de sus cuentos de hadas fue publicada por primera vez en 1812, y numerosas ediciones siguieron la primera durante el siglo XIX, todas ellas ampliamente ilustradas, incluyendo obras de Gustave Dore.
