Gustave Doré permaneció en Londres intermitentemente entre los años 1868 y 1873. Durante este tiempo hizo estudios de las niñas de flores por el Royal Exchange, pintando paradójicamente con canastas francesas. El biógrafo de Doré afirmó que “fue conmovido por la triste belleza que se encuentra en los vendedores de flores callejeras pobres”, una simpatía que tal vez se pueda sentir en esta pintura. Las obras de Doré pusieron de relieve el golfo entre la alta sociedad y la sombría vida de los pobres en la capital.
