Durante la guerra mundial Yo, cada momento que podía alejarse de sus deberes clericales en la oficina del patrón de pagos en Gersthofen, cerca de Augsburg, Klee dedicado a su trabajo. Tomaría una caja de acuarelas y pintaría fuera de las puertas. Aquí, una luna verde y su crescente mauve son las únicas formas curvas dentro de una composición angular cuyos rectángulos, triángulos y cuadrados sugieren los techos y fachadas de las casas.
