El pintor de miniatura Hall fue uno de los retratistas suecos que disfrutaron de gran popularidad en Francia, mostrando en el Salón oficial y patronizado por la élite cultural y política. El sitter, Maurice, comenzó como abogado antes de convertirse en un retratoista que contó con la emperatriz Catherine el Grande (1729-1796) y la reina Marie Antoinette (1755-1793) entre sus partidarios. Fechada 1772, esta miniatura representa a Maurice en el cuello abierto y ropa sencilla que debe haber sido concebida para anunciar su nueva carrera como artista.
