Este esbozo de aceite es el diseño de Rubens para un conjunto de retablo en la iglesia de los Carmelitas Calced en Amberes, que fue ejecutado en 1637–38 por el pintor Gerard Seghers y el escultor Hans van Mildert. El Cristo resucitado triunfa sobre el pecado y la muerte (la serpiente y el esqueleto), y está flanqueado de izquierda a derecha por Melquisedek, Elías, San Pablo y San Cirilo de Alejandría, que estaban todos asociados con la Eucaristía. En las columnas y esquinas superiores del panel, Rubens ofrece al patrón una selección de motivos arquitectónicos.
