Desde julio de 1816 hasta el verano de 1817, cinco jóvenes artistas alemanes del llamado ‘Lukasbund’ [Brotherhood of St Luke] – Wilhelm Schadow, Philipp Veit, Franz Catel, Friedrich Overbeck y Peter Cornelius – pintaron una habitación en el Palazzo Zuccari en Roma, los barrios oficiales del Cónsul General Prusiano, Jakob Salomon Bartholdy. Las pinturas están ahora albergadas en la Alte Nationalgalerie (Berlín). El intento de invertir el arte tradicional del fresco monumental con un nuevo prestigio público comenzó así en un contexto pequeño, semi-privado; los temas cristianos fueron especialmente favorecidos para este propósito. Este esbozo muestra el pasaje del Antiguo Testamento del Libro de Moisés (1:41) donde el joven José interpreta el sueño del Faraón de los siete gordos y los siete años magros. La composición difiere del mural, que, tras un puñado de alteraciones, fue realizada posteriormente por Philipp Veit.
