Este sillón forma parte de la popular gama Morris & Co. ‘Sussex’ que también incluía un asentamiento, sillas de esquina y sillas individuales (sin brazos). La gama fue fabricada y vendida desde 1869 hasta los años 20 y fue inspirada en una silla de campo a finales de Georgia que se encuentra en Sussex. Las sillas fueron diseñadas probablemente por Philip Webb. Además de tener éxito comercial, las sillas también fueron utilizadas por socios de Morris & Co. en sus propios hogares. William y Jane Morris usaron sillas "Sussex" en su primera casa familiar, Red House, y en su última casa de Londres, Kelmscott House en Hammersmith. Edward Burne-Jones también usó sillas "Sussex" en su estudio de jardín en The Grange, Fulham.
