El nombre de Sauvage era sinónimo de trompe l'oeil (olver el ojo) pinturas que imitaban esculturas antiguas de bajo relieve y se hicieron enormemente populares para la decoración de la habitación neoclásica. La pintura actual está destinada a imitar el bronce. Sauvage exhibió una versión ligeramente mayor de este tema en el Salón de 1781. Otra versión también está en The Met.
