De 1552 a 1567, el comerciante inglés Thomas Gresham (1519-1579) vivió y trabajó en Amberes como agente financiero de la corona inglesa (el mercader de King). Esta prominente posición social explica por qué tenía su retrato pintado por Mor, que era artista de la corte a Felipe II. Este pintor nacido en Utrecht fue notado para la grabación precisa de los detalles en sus retratos. Describió a Gresham como una personalidad fuerte, algo reservada. Mor también pintó un retrato de la esposa de Gresham, que también está en el Rijksmuseum.
