Mucho como Jean Marc Nattier en la próxima generación, Gobert se convirtió en un retratista de moda entre la aristocracia francesa y la familia real en el tribunal, en parte mediante la concesión de a todos sus niñeras una gracia uniforme que a menudo hace difícil diferenciar una identidad dada. La inscripción indica que esta es Marie Adélaïde, la madre de Luis XV, que se sentó para Gobert en varias ocasiones. El brazalete y el vestido bajo y transparente indican un retrato clásico y alegórico que la eleva al reino de los dioses en lugar de representar la moda contemporánea.
