El belga Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) logró el éxito como artista oficial de la corte de la Reina Marie Antoinette. En 1798 fue nombrado para pintar las flores de Malmaison por Josephine Bonaparte. Redouté dominó la técnica inusual de grabado estipple que hizo posible las sutiles variaciones de color para las que su obra es reconocida. Redouté contribuyó más de 2100 platos de colores publicados durante su vida, representando más de 1800 especies, muchos nunca ilustrados antes.
