La Grenouillère, el estanque de ranas era un lugar popular para los paseos de París y para bañarse en verano, situado fuera de Bougival al oeste de la capital. El sol se filtra a través de las hojas verdes y brilla en la superficie del río Sena. La gente se está bañando. Algunos están en barcos, remo o navegando en el río. Un grupo de hombres con trajes y mujeres con crinolinas han buscado sombra bajo un árbol en la pequeña isla artificial conocida como Camembert o el florero. Es el verano de 1869 y el pintor Auguste Renoir y su colega y amigo Claude Monet están pasando unos días juntos. Pintan el mismo tema.
