El gran óleo sobre lienzo, firmado en la parte inferior izquierda por Pietro Paietta, retrata el interior de un establo, donde una joven campesina observa un becerro recién nacido, acurrucado bajo el pesebre junto a su madre. La campesina, de pie simétricamente entre la vaca, lleva un vestido azul con un delantal azul y una camisa blanca. El pañuelo estampado atado alrededor del cuello y las medias rojas brillantes en los coágulos negros destacan. Los abrigos de los dos ganados, representados con ojos negros vivos, son ambos iridiscentes debido al efecto de la luz, cuya fuente no es visible. El mensaje universal de la maternidad que une la condición humana con el animal se traduce aquí gracias al artista
