Según el primer biógrafo de Testa, el artista trató de estudiar la luz y la atmósfera de la noche a lo largo del río Tiber de Roma “trayendo y observando algunas reflexiones del arco iris en el agua”. Los resultados fueron paisajes melancólicos que prefiguran la obra de pintores románicos del siglo XIX. It was in such a situation of direct observation by night that Testa evidently ahogado, allegedly by suicide, in 1650. Esta dramática representación de Alejandro Magno que sufre de un escalofrío repentino mientras bañarse en el río Cydnus es considerada una de sus pinturas finales, y se hace eco de su biografía.
