En Kilimanur, Ravi Varma y su hermano C. Raja Varma albergaron una gran colección de libros de arte, catálogos, postales y fotografías, acumuladas mientras viajaban, y que sirvieron de material fuente constante. Cuando era necesario, Ravi Varma no dudaba en incorporar posturas clásicas occidentales o posturas heroicas en sus propias obras. Hay tal vez, un ejemplo conocido de Ravi Varma replicando una pintura europea en su totalidad en lugar de una adaptación parcial. En su visita a Baroda en 1888, Ravi Varma había visto a Judith, pintada por Benjamin Constant en 1886.
