El último trabajo de la Gemäldegalerie de Raphael data de finales de la época florentina y muestra un marcado cambio frente a la Madonna Terranuova, que data de sólo unos años antes: la paleta se ha vuelto mucho más ligera, incluso cambiando de rubia oscura a ligera para el cabello, el chiaroscuro es un poco más reticente, y el modelado más delicado. Las características son más suaves y más completas, los movimientos menos restringidos, más animados y más elegantes. Cristo está girando su rostro al espectador en un movimiento aparentemente espontáneo. Al mismo tiempo el horizonte se baja, el paisaje se vuelve más delicado, y los árboles más plumados.
