Según la mitología griega, la princesa Andromeda tuvo que ser sacrificada para salvar su tierra de un monstruo mar voraz. Después de ser encadenada a una roca esperando su destino, fue rescatada por el héroe griego Perseus. En lugar de pintar toda la historia, Rembrandt sólo representó a la aterrada Andrómeda. Hacer emoción el motivo principal de la escena es característico de la obra de Rembrandt. El naturalismo con el que pintó el cuerpo desnudo está lejos de los ideales clásicos de la belleza.
