Este retrato representa muy probablemente al subastador de Amsterdam Pieter Haringh, que una vez manejaba la venta de un famoso retrato del maestro del Renacimiento italiano Raphael que sirvió a Rembrandt como fuente de inspiración. El sitter puede haber utilizado la lupa en su mano para evaluar pinturas y otros artículos de lujo circulando en el ajetreado mercado de arte de Amsterdam. Como su esposa en el retrato colgante también a la vista aquí, el tamiz lleva una forma de vestido elegante que tiene poco que ver con la ropa holandesa usada en ese momento.
