El hombre es más probable Cornelis van Beresteyn (1586-1638), un rico burgomaestre de Delft. Su postura restringida y expresión sobria contrastan con la animación y accesibilidad que Rembrandt solía atribuir a miembros de la sociedad de Amsterdam. En ese momento, los retratos en Delft y en la vecina ciudad de La Haya eran notablemente conservadores, adhiriéndose a una tradición que se remontaba a los retratos reales españoles de mediados de los 1500. Rembrandt es conocido por haber pintado algunos retratos en La Haya durante 1632.
