Gerard de Lairesse (1641–1711) fue, en su día, un conocido pintor, etcher y teórico del arte. Sufría de la sífilis congénita, que le hizo ciego alrededor de 1690; posteriormente centró sus energías en la teoría del arte. Para cuando se pintó este retrato, en 1665, los efectos devastadores de la enfermedad fueron visibles en sus rasgos hinchados y nariz bulbosa. Grabando su apariencia desafortunada con una dirección intransigente, Rembrandt invirtió su tema con un aire de dignidad tranquila. Aunque las teorías del sitter sobre el ideal en la pintura eran antitéticas al estilo de Rembrandt, que Lairesse apreció de manera discretativa "lodo licuado sobre el lienzo", la imagen es simpática.
