Carriera era conocida en toda Europa por sus retratos pasteles, pero también pionera el uso de marfil como soporte para miniatures retrato. Este uso de marfil pronto se volvería omnipresente entre los miniaturistas. En este ejemplo, Carriera utiliza brillantemente el suelo blanco para el tono de la piel, sobre el cual estipletó la pintura (los puntos diminutos que se adhieren mejor a marfil) y lavados aplicados para la armadura, que es entonces azulado, un proceso donde se da un acabado protector a los metales que resulta en un acabado distintivo, azul-negro.
