Bourdon fue uno de los seguidores más ardientes de Nicolas Poussin, y a menudo se fue a grandes extensiones para mostrar familiaridad con las referencias clásicas Poussin había sido pionero en la pintura. En este paisaje rigurosamente estructurado, Bourdon citó obras antiguas y contemporáneas del arte clásico: la gran estatua de un caballo a la izquierda cita directamente una estatua encontrada en el Quirinal Hill de Roma, mientras que el grupo de bailarines a la derecha viene del Bacchanal de Poussin (ca. 1632–33; National Gallery, Londres).
