Esta pintura, al exhibir la técnica de tinta moteada (tarashikomi) de la escuela Rinpa, refleja el interés del artista en el realismo del estilo occidental, que se combina con formas sofisticadas y elegantes. Las hojas intrincadamente curvadas del árbol y la hierba evocan el cielo frío del día de otoño claro aludido en la inscripción, que data de la pantalla hasta finales del otoño de 1816. Hōitsu nació en una familia rica e influyente samurai y tuvo todas las ventajas de la mejor educación, incluyendo la oportunidad de estudiar muchos de los estilos de pintura disponibles para los artistas de Edo Japón. Se convirtió en monje en 1797 y adoptó el nombre sacerdotal Monsen Kishin, que aparece en el sello y la firma en esta pantalla.
