Fue pintado en 1860 de una famosa foto de Garibaldi que Gustave Le Gray había tomado. En ese mismo año, este último se detuvo en Palermo mientras viajaba hacia el este con Alexandre Dumas tras las noticias de que la ciudad había sido conquistada. Fue el ‘Liberador’ en persona encargar a Le Gray la fotografía que estaba obligada a convertirse en un verdadero icono patriótico. En este lienzo, Lo Forte ejecutó un tipo de pintura fotogénica que ya le había hecho famoso en Palermo algún tiempo antes.
