Samuel Cooper es considerado como el primer miniaturista del siglo XVII. Cooper aprendió el oficio de su tío, John Hoskins. Durante el período de gobierno parlamentario inglés conocido como Interregnum, Cooper fue empleado por Oliver Cromwell, quien sirvió como Lord Protector de la Commonwealth de Inglaterra, Escocia e Irlanda de 1653 a 1658. Esta miniatura muestra a la hija más joven de Cromwell, Frances, a los 16 años. Cooper se convirtió en el pintor de la corte del rey Carlos II cuando la monarquía inglesa fue restaurada en 1660, dos años después de la muerte de Cromwell. Según un diario de período, el nuevo rey se sentó inmediatamente para Cooper para hacer “un crayoning de la cara y la cabeza del rey, para hacer los sellos” para las monedas recién emitidas.
