Samuel Bourne tomó esta vista dentro de la mezquita de Gyanvapi en Varanasi (antes Benares), una ciudad a orillas del Ganges en el norte de la India. La mezquita fue construida por el emperador Mughal Aurangzeb en el sitio de un antiguo templo hindú dedicado a Shiva. La fotografía de Bourne ilustra cómo Gyanvapi era un palimpsesto de las creencias religiosas: dentro de la mezquita, pilares ornamentalmente tallados rodean la estatua central de Nandi, un toro sentado que es una característica de los templos de Shiva. La escultura en la pared representa a Hanuman, el dios del mono hindú.
