Los sitters son los cuatro hijos del comerciante de cuero y cuero Shepherd Knapp (1795-1875) y su esposa, Catherine Louisa Kumbel (1793-1872). Son, de izquierda a derecha, Gideon Lee (1821-1875), Shepherd Fordyce (1832-1886), William Kumbel (1827-1877), y Peter Kumbel (1825-1871). Shepherd Fordyce Knapp parece no ser mayor de dos años, que fecharía el trabajo a 1833 o 1834. Todos los niños se casarían y Gideon Lee Knapp se convertiría más tarde en el propietario y gerente del Green Point Ferry. El tipo de retrato, entre los más complejos y exitosos pintados por Waldo y Jewett, es uno informado por el retrato inglés del siglo XVIII. Waldo estudió en Londres entre 1806 y 1809 y su exposición a retratos de Benjamin West, en cuyo estudio era asistente, es evidente.
