Charles Bray era un próspero fabricante de cintas que poseía el periódico Coventry Herald. Usó la riqueza generada por sus negocios para establecer escuelas públicas no sectarias y tratar de producir cambios beneficiosos en muchos otros aspectos de la sociedad. Ayudó a fundar The Coventry Labourers " Artisans Co-operative Society que proporcionaba jardines para hombres de trabajo y una cooperativa. Bray se casó con Caroline (Cara) Hennell en 1836. Su hogar, Rosehill, se convirtió en un centro para el pensamiento radical sobre la religión y la política. Mary Ann Evans (George Eliot) era amiga de los Brays.
