Sebastiano Ricci, che si era già misurato con analoghe tematiche in alcuni dipinti precedentei, quali il Ratto di Briseide e il Ratto di Proserpina, in questa tela mette in scena Elena di Troia, mitologiela figlia di Leda e Giove, sorella dei Dioscuri nota per la sua proverbiale belle L’iconografia qui adottata è fedele al racconto: Paride stringe fra le braccia la recalcitrante Elena per condurla sulla barca ormeggiata in un approdo naturale, roccioso, mentre i suoi compagni gli guardano le spalle e i marinai trattengono la barca puntando i remi sul fondo o aggrappandosi a un sostegno, e le Nereidi fanno da cornice alla scena calmando le acque del mare per consentire la fuga.
